The Critical Cyberbiosecurity Gaps in Laboratory Infrastructure.

ABI launched the first webinar in the series for 2025 with the title “The Critical Cyberbiosecurity Gaps in Laboratory Infrastructure”. The invited expert was Mark Raymund G. Nava, RMT, MPA, MSMT, CBP, IFBA PC dari University of Santo Thomas, Philipines, who is the Board Member of Biorisk Association of Philippines (BRAP) and Professionally Certified in Cyberbiosecurity by the International Federation of Biosafety Associations. The webinar was attended by over 60 participants from various institutions (academics, governmental agencies, ministries and industries) in Indonesia.

The webinar discussed the basic understanding on cyberbiosecurity, and its relation to biosecurity, cybersecurity, and physical security for laboratory facilities, how to identify safety risk of biological data, and how to prevent and handle cyber-attacks. The lecture also included the use of the internet of things (IoT) in the laboratory that could become the compromised entry for cyber attack and how to mitigate when such attacks happened.

Cyberbiosecurity is a relatively new topics that deals with and focuses on the security of biological system and data from harm in the cyber web. It covers protection against cyber attacks that can harm the security of biological matters, such as stealing of genetics data, obstruction of facility for research on biological , or improper use of biological technique for harmful purpose. Important aspects of cyberbiosecurity include the safety of biological data, safety of biological system, monitoring and regulation. Cyberbiosecurity is increaseingly important with the advancement in biological techniques and increasing use of biological data in various field, like scientific research, drug development, and agriculture.
